Sleep, besides movement and nutrition is probably one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves. It plays an important role in our physical health. Did you know, a good night’s sleep is not only important for improving learning, paying attention, making decisions, and being creative, but is also extremely necessary in the healing and repair of our heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. During sleep, our bodies are working to support healthy brain function and maintain our physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. In fact SLEEP is just as important as eating healthy and exercising – good sleep is one of the pillars of health. An adult should be getting a minimum of 7.5 hours, preferably 8.5 hours a night and children vary by age. Just to give you an idea, my kiddos ore 11 and 13 and require 10 hours of sleep per night. Some factors to take into consideration to ensure you get a good nightโ€™s sleep: 1. Set the same bedtime every night. 2. Create a bedtime routine – meditate before bed, create a quiet space/time before bed, read for 20 minutes before bed (and not books that will keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning). 3. Make your room as dark as possible (blackout curtains/blinds). No additional lights on. (I will get more into this in a later blog – stay tuned) 4. No electronics in the room – and if you have to, keep it at a minimum of three feet away from your bed preferably on airplane mode (notifications off/in do not disturb mode) 5. Keep your room cool – as nighttime approaches, our body temperature naturally drops, signaling that itโ€™s time to slow down and get rest. By keeping your bedroom cooler, youโ€™re reinforcing your bodyโ€™s natural instinct to sleep. If the room is too hot, it could potentially block that signal and cause it to take longer for you to fall asleep. I will at a later stage, do a blog on sleeping – how to get a good nightโ€™s rest and an in-depth rlook as to why it is so important. But for today we are keeping it simple. Now, go get some sleep!!! ๐Ÿคฃ As always, I leave you today with love and gratitude and if you have any questions, please drop me a message.
