Social Media Time-out
Well I sincerely debated todayโs topic on journaling or social media timeout and needless to say I felt a strong pull to talk about taking a time out from social media and why it is necessary. Social media can be so inspiring, entertaining, bring communities together and a great platform to meet new friends and make connections. However there is definitely a flip-side that is definitely not so un and has been known to lead to depression, low self-esteem, body image issues, anxiety, social isolation (as if we need anymore of that right now, and so onโฆ The one thing about social media I know, is that it is a distraction, from work from play and from life and even from distraction. We are constantly seeing these highlight reels of strangers and many of us develop a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) because our lives are not as glamorous or adventurous as what we see being portrayed on social media. I have also noticed a growing lack of tolerance – whether it be someoneโs political beliefs, religious beliefs, opinions, work, styleโฆ it doesnโt end there. The rudeness, the bullying and the meanness are somedays too much to deal with and I just want to escape back into my world with my children, in my home where life looks good and really is good. I have realized that when something or someone doesnโt make me feel good about myself, or is being mean to someone for some unnecessary reason, or is not tolerant of someoneโs opinionsโฆI DONT HAVE TO FOLLOW THEM, LIKE THEM, OR EVEN READ THE COMMENTS. I know that during this crazy-ass time we are all going through, it seems as though social media fills that gap, that link to the outside world of connection we all so crave and many of us are restricted from right now. That being said, now is probably as good a time as any, maybe even more so now with the added time we all seem to be spending on the screen. While I try and post three times a week, I donโt want to be stressed to post more, or post stories every single dayโฆ. I truly have too much else going on in my life that needs my attention. Taking that break allows me to be more productive, spend more time with my family, engage in something I love doing (on my own or with my family), maybe trying something I have always wanted to do but never quite got around to doing, and last but certainly not least, socializing. โRespect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy.โ Robert Tews Now, go take that break – you are not going to miss a thing but might instead gain something way more valuable!!! As always, I leave you today with love and gratitude and if you have any questions, please drop me a message.
